Venice – Day 1

We awoke on our night train with breakfast in bed (hahaha):

On arrival in Venice we boarded a water bus to get to the main center of town. It’s more like we were pushed on a boat with hundreds of others. I thought for sure I was going over board. But somehow I fit on the boat and I stayed on.

It took us a while to find a place to stay. Apparently this is the high season in Venice. The weather is perfect….neither hot nor cold and there seems to be a ton of Americans, Brits and Italians. So many tourists it’s hard to walk around the city. I’ve never seen it so bad. All the hotels, food etc. are super expensive, so we will only stay a night in Venice.

We decided to try and visit the Accademia (Venice’s top art museum). I remember this museum from the last time I came to Venice (9 yrs ago or so). It’s always crowded, but this time we came at the perfect time. It wasn’t busy at all. Peter and I shared a headset and both of us tended to walk in opposite directions....not good when one has headphones and the other is listening on a device….hahhah.

We decided to do a self guided cruise (with our own book) on the canal. Some highlights were the Cannaregio Canal (were the original ghetto was located), the Turkish exchange (the oldest building in Venice), Venice’s casino (you have to dress real fancy to get into the casino….Peter forgot his suit at home), San Stae, Ca’d’Oro (house of gold), Rialto bridge, some palaces, Accademia, La Salute church, customs house, and more that I can’t remember.

The sun was starting to set and we walked along the water and visited the typical tourist hot spots and ducked into churches here and there. Peter asked me why I always make the sign of the cross after I enter churches. It’s a habit from catholic school.

We came close to going to mass at St. Mark’s Basilica. I’m sure Peter would have not enjoyed that. We thought we were in line to see the church.

The sun finally set and bands played in St. Mark’s Square….Peter and I did some dancing (yes Peter danced with me and he was sober). After some dancing we went in search of a restaurant……there we met people from all over the world. Most of them were Americans. Wine is cheaper than beer so we stuck with vino. I practiced some Italian……it’s decent enough to show the locals I care. I’m in the land of my favorite food, Peter is not so lucky. He likes German food better. I was sort of getting use to goulash.

After dinner I found the local area of town. I have a knack for that, but Peter says it’s because I get us lost, but I tell him you’re not really lost if you want to be lost.

After a few more glasses of vino we found our way back to the hotel.
