For breakfast we did it Spanish style….churros and coffee, then we headed off to check out the royal palace, which they say is Europe’s third greatest palace. One being the Schonbrunn (which we have seen), the next being Versailles (which we will see) and then this one. Next we visited the palace armory with all the typical weaponry etc. There were some suits of armor with strange almost jock straps built in the armor that were rather interesting.
Most of the museums were closed so we did some wondering and checked out the city. I even found a huge bookstore that even had books in English, I stocked up. I’ve already been through 6 books.
That night we went out for tapas and found a local joint and ordered in Spanish….unfortunately we didn’t understand the waiter completely and in came some humongous plates of what looked like to me like a plate of raw beef big enough to feed 6 people and then a plate of tomatoes, lettuce, olives and some odd looking meat (I think it was fish). Then the water brought a plate of bread with tapas of squid, and other things I don’t think I could stomach….we passed on that plate….but the first two were suppose to be tapas and a salad….wow. We met a mother and son sitting next to us who were from Madrid and they said the portions were huge and that’s what this place was known for. The son tried to order a half beer with spritzer and the waiter said he didn’t serve those kinds of drinks….it was too sissy. They shared their cheese with us and we shared our plate of meat.
We ended the night with a few drinks at a local joint where you could admire pig legs on the wall and even saw some dude cut his own meat from the pig leg sitting on the bar…..gross.
Luckily our pensione is located in a local area known for their bars and food….although some of the food is interesting and I’m not sure I would eat on a regular basis, but I’m all for trying it once.
